MetaSort

Organize your library by date.

A native Mac app that sorts your photos, videos, and audio into clean, date-based folders — using the real capture date embedded in each file, not the filesystem date. Everything happens on your Mac. No cloud, no accounts, no tracking.

When reporting a bug, it helps to include your macOS version and, if it’s about a specific file, the file type — but don’t worry if you’re not sure.

Common questions

Will MetaSort move or delete my originals?

Only if you ask it to. Every run starts with a dry-run Preview that shows exactly where each file will land before anything is touched. You choose Copy, Move, or In-place, and if you change your mind, Undo Last Run reverses the whole operation.

Which file formats does it support?

30+ image formats — JPEG, PNG, HEIC, WebP, and 25+ professional RAW types like Canon CR2/CR3, Nikon NEF, Sony ARW, and Adobe DNG — plus common video and audio files. Files without a readable capture date fall back to their modification time.

Does it touch my Photos library?

No. MetaSort never reads or modifies your macOS or iOS Photos library. It works only with the folders you pick and the cameras or memory cards you connect over USB — and it imports only the files you choose.

How are folders named?

By default, files land in a YYYY/MM/DD/ hierarchy with a timestamp filename. You can also pick a built-in style or design your own folder template with tokens like {YYYY}, {MM}, and {DD}.

What data do you collect?

None. MetaSort makes no network connections and works entirely offline — there’s no account, no analytics, and no tracking. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.

What do I need to run it?

macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. MetaSort is pure native Swift — no bundled runtimes, no background services, nothing to install alongside it.
